Clean Water Access

The Challenge

In Gataba, Rwanda, the community, including students and families, faces a critical lack of a reliable water source. They must walk 2-3 kilometers daily to fetch water from an exposed, contaminated spring. This results in children arriving late to school, the spread of waterborne diseases, and a constant strain on daily life.

Project AMAZI (meaning "water" in Kinyarwanda) is here to address this urgent need for improved sanitation and hygiene, creating a lasting impact on this community of approximately 4,627 residents.

The Problem

Lack of Access: Daily 3 km walks to an open spring for water collection.

Health Risks: Contaminated water source, leading to the spread of waterborne diseases.

Education Impact: Students miss valuable class time due to water fetching duties.

Vulnerability: The open spring is exposed, leaving the water supply vulnerable to further contamination.

Our Solution

Gravity-Fed Line: Construction of a 3-kilometer gravity-fed water line.

Targeted Delivery: Delivery of clean, safe water directly to the Gataba School.

Community Access: Installation of several community tap stands throughout the area.

Sustainable Access: Providing sustainable and reliable access to clean water for the entire community, improving daily life and health.

Project History & Next Steps

The project began in August 2025 as our chapter challenged itself to apply our engineering expertise to global needs. The proposed solution involves connecting the existing water source to the school and community tap stands.

The next step is the Assessment Trip, where our team will gather data and collaborate directly with the community to finalize the most effective design and implementation approach.
